London: British Prime Minister David Cameron on Wednesday has pledged to give the police whatever they need to combat rioting and said contingency plans are in place for water cannon to be available at 24 hours’ notice.
Cameron was speaking after chairing the Government’s second emergency Cobra meeting.
The prime minister said “we needed a fight back and a fight back is under way” after four days of riots.
“It is clear there are things that are badly wrong in our society.” he added.
He also said operations were going on to pick up suspects who had been identified using CCTV images.
“Force is absolutely intent on bringing the rioters to justice and officers are already studying CCTV” Cameron said.
“Hundreds and hundreds of people, we have your image, we have your face, we have your acts of wanton criminality on film. We are coming for you, from today and no matter how long it takes, we will arrest those people responsible,” he said.
The prime minister said every action would be taken to restore order, with contingency plans for water cannon to be available at 24 hours’ notice.
Cameron said a “more robust approach” by Scotland Yard on Tuesday night had prevented a repeat of the worst trouble.
