Pallekele: Sri Lanka brushed away Australia in the second Twenty20 as spinner Ajantha Mendis destroyed Kangaroos’ batting line and took six wickets at Pallekele International Stadium on Monday.
Mendis brilliant spell lead Sri Lanka to a sensational win against Australia in the second match and win the two-match series 2-0.
Sri Lankan skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan won the toss and decided to bat first. They scored 157-9 in allotted 20 overs with Mahela Jayawardene’s wonderful 86 runs. Sangakkara made 24 runs while Chandimal scored 13 runs.
Australian seamers John Hastings and Brett Lee took three wickets apiece.
Hastings took three wickets with best bowling figures 3-14. Lee returned 3-39.
In reply Australia managed just 149-9 in 20 overs. Australian opener Shane Watson provided a brilliant start to his team by five sixes and six boundaries for 57 runs off just 24 balls but no other Australian batsmen except Cameron White resisted Sri Lankan bowlers, he scored 39 runs.
Mendis picked up six wickets for just 16 runs. Thisara Perera, Rangana Herath and Angelo Mathews shared one wicket each.
Mendis after taking his career best bowling in the short form of cricket broke down Pakistani seamer Umar Gul’s five wickets for six runs record which he made against New Zealand in 2009.
Ajantha Mendis was declared man of the match.
