Karachi: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has called for a political solution to the Karachi violence, which according to its has claimed 1,138 lives in the first six months of 2011, of whom 490 were victims of political, ethnic and sectarian violence.
The HRCP on Monday said that Karachi was in the grip of a multi-sided wave of insecurity-driven political, ethnic and sectarian polarisation that had greatly undermined its tradition of tolerance and good-neighbourliness.
It said that though the gangs of land-grabbers and mafias had tried to exploit the breakdown of law and order, they did not appear to be the main directors of the horrible game of death and destruction, adding that the distinction belongs to more powerful political groups and it is they who hold the key to peace.”
Meanwhile, eight more people fell victim to the latest spate of targeted killings in different parts of Karachi, including, Oragni Town and Sarjani Town.
