Islamabad: Supreme Court on Friday indicted Director General Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Malik Muhammand Iqbal, in the contempt of court case.
A three-member bench of Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing the contempt of court case against DG FIA, for transferring investigation officers of Hajj and NICL corruption cases, who were probing the mega corruption scandal on SC orders and had made substantial progress .
Earlier, the court had issued show cause notice to Malik Iqbal in the contempt case. Filing his reply, Malik Iqbal had tendered unconditional apology but the court did not accepted his apology and decided to proceed against him.
During the course of hearing on Friday, Supreme Court asked Attorney General for Pakistan to prepare the draft of charge sheet against the DG FIA within half-hour. Â As in contempt of court cases, Attorney General acts as prosecutor general, he prepared the draft of the indictment within 30 minutes and submitted to the court. Upon this, the apex court formally indicted the DG FIA in the contempt of court charges, and Chief Justice read out the charges to the accused. Â Counsel for the DG FIA, Abdul Hafeed Pirzada pleaded the court to accept his apology, saying that his client was retiring on July 14. He submitted that his client was ready to relinquish the charge and go on leave. However, the apex court did not accept the plea and proceeded against the DG.
The chief justice handed over the draft of the charge sheet to the accused and directed him to submit his reply. The court sought record of NICL case and transfer of Zafar Qureshi.
Later the court adjourned further hearing by June 8, 2011.
