Beijing: At least 40 people have been arrested for allegedly trafficking at least 22 babies for sale elsewhere in the country, state news agency of China reported.
The Xinhua News Agency said that members of the gang were apprehended Thursday in a series of raids in the east and southwest China. More than 200 officers participated in the operation.
The news agency says the group bought babies from Yunnan, one of China’s impoverished provinces, and sold them to relatively wealthy Fujian families.
It says officials have traced 22 babies who were trafficked by the ring and are searching for others.
China’s booming black market in children endures despite harsh penalties, including death. Some babies are sold by their parents while many others are simply stolen.
