Karachi/Islamabad: News websites that focus on Pakistan got 7 times as much traffic immediately after the death of Osama bin Laden as they usually get.
According to TheNewsTribe.com’s correspondents from Islamabad and Karachi, the premier English newspaper DAWN got 1,193,000 visits from across Pakistan.
A field study conducted by The News Tribe revealed that the Pakistani government tried to restrict Pakistani newspapers’ and television channels’ reporting following the killing, which made people turn to online media, as it provides sufficient coverage to readers without facing any hurdle.
Jang Group, the biggest media group of Pakistan, also enjoyed larger number of visitors from Pakistan. Urdu daily Jang’s website entertained 150 percent extra traffic. Visits to it from within Pakistan rose to 3,138,000. Its English language newspaper The News got 93,000 readers in 24 hours, which was 67 percent higher than routine.
UK-based bilingual news website The News Tribe, which started its service from Pakistan on January 1, 2011, received 500 percent extra visits from 126 countries. The increase in traffic from Pakistan was 700 percent.
Daily Ummat, which is published from Karachi, got 200 percent increase in traffic. The number of people that visited its website on May 2 was 47,000.
The Express Tribune, an English daily published from Karachi, had 1,120,000 users from Pakistan after OBL’s death. Urdu daily Express of the same group got 2,l20,000 visitors from all over the country.
According to TNT’s database developed with the help of Google analytics and Alexa, Pakistani TV channel Geo’s website got 118 percent extra traffic with 3,l32,000 visitors.
