Madrid: A 5.2 magnitude earthquake hit Lorca, southern Spain, where hundreds of British expatriate live, leaving 11 people dead, rescue sources said. Several medieval buildings also collapsed.
The epicenter of the quake was registered in the Tercia mountain range close to the town of Lorca, where several buildings were destroyed including a medieval church.
Authorities confirmed that at least 11 people had died, including a child of 13 years old.
Earlier a quake registering 4.4 on the Richter scale occurred at 5.05pm local time, and the second bigger shock of 5.2 followed later. The town is house to some 90,000 residents.
Emergency has been imposed in the hospitals and rescue teams have also been ordered to speed up relief work.
