Karachi: At least 22 people were killed and 35 others were injured in a blast in Gambling Club in Karachi, the southern city of Pakistan on Thursday late night, police sources said.
The incident took place in Ghas Mandi close to Liyari within the limits of Risala Police Station when unidentified persons riding a bike threw hand grenade at a Rami Club (Gambling Club) and escape, the sources said.
The sources said at the time of blast there were a lot of rush inside the club. The club was located in the residential area.
The bodies and injured were rushed to Civil Hospital Karachi and Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center for autopsies and treatment.
Medico Legal Officer Lala Mubarak said that 10 of the injured were serious. Sources said some of the injured were also taken to Liyari General Hospital, while hospital sources said that 20 to 25 injured were serious.
Inspector General Police Sindh Fayyaz Leghari and Adviser Sindh Home Department Sharfuddin Memon have confirmed that death 15 people. They said some 38 people were injured in the blast.
Sindh Health Minister Dr Sagheer Ahmed announced medical emergency in Civil Hospital Karachi and Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center.
Heavy contingent of police and rangers were rushed to the spot and started investigation into the incident. Bomb disposal squad also rushed to the spot and started collecting evidences.
While, local sources said that unidentified men kept a suspicious shopper on the gate of the club that later exploded with a big bang. The Rami Club is running a man named Aijaz, patronizing by a officer of Sindh Police named Waseem.
The local sources also said that the blast was seemed an IED blast but is yet to be confirmed that how kg explosives were used in the blast.
While DIG Sough Iqbal Mehmood has also said that the blast was IED and explosives were kept under a table in the club. Two kg explosive were used in the blast, according to the bomb disposal squad.
The club was stated the largest gambling point of Karachi and at least 42 close circuit cameras were installed around the club. While, it is also stated that the club was the biggest in Asia.
Local sources said that even police were not allowed to approach the club.
The local sources said that the club was being run with very organise manner and mobile phones and cameras were not allowed inside the club. Media persons also not allowed inside the Rami Club.
A body has been formed to investigate the blast.
Later, Sindh Minister for Information Sharjeel Memon visited the spot and directed the relevant authorities to investigate the case with immediate effect so as to arrest the accused involved behind the blast.
He sought report of the blast from IG Sindh Police within 24 hours.
