You go to any fuel station in Karachi selling CNG (compressed natural gas) and you will find that most of the vehicles getting CNG are big cars, obviously owned by rich people. Do they deserve to get this cheap fuel? I think this question must be asked of Shaukat Aziz and Pervez Musharraf. They allowed car owners to get CNG kit installed and enjoy this cheap fuel.
The use of this cheap fuel, which has resulted in gas shortages over the past few years, should have been confined to buses, which are used by the poorest of the poor of this country. Had the Shaukat Aziz and Pervez Musharraf taken a decision to this effect, the lives of our poorest fellows would have become much better.
Isn’t it injustice that the poorest face increases in bus fares after every few years becuase of the “international oil price increase” while the rich enjoy the benefit of CNG which is produced in our country? Why shouldn’t a man who owns a car of Rs 13 lac be asked to buy petrol? If he can buy an expensive car, he should also buy expensive fuel.
Those who travel by buses are the most unfortunate people of this country. They are even worse than those who travel by motorcycles because they travel in extreme heat, face congestion and then they have to fight over one rupee or two with conductors of buses. Shouldn’t the government give them some relief by restricting the use of CNG for buses, which will allow reduction in bus fares?
It is time the government did away with this senseless policy of giving a cheap fuel to the rich and forcing the poor to pay higher amount of money for travelling in miserable conditions. Otherwise it might become too late for the government to act. We have already seen a few revolutions recently.
