Florida: Pakistani Ambassador to Washington Husain Haqqani has gravely condemned desecration of the Holy Quran by a controversial American pastor, Terry Jones, and called for prevention of incidents that hurt feelings of the Muslims and make threats to religious harmony.
While talking to United States media representatives at Faith Angle Forum organized by Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC) Miami, Florida, Haqqani strongly condemned the desecration of Holy Quran at Dove World Outreach Church that took place under supervision of Terry Jones. Haqqani said Islam is a peaceful and tolerant religion.
The US and the West should not be mislead by the action of few trying to defame Islam with their acts of terrorism. “People should prevent such incidents that hurt the feelings of the Muslims around the world and globally threaten the religious harmony.”
Haqqani said the US and NATO countries should accept the sacrifices rendered by the security forces and the people of Pakistan in war on terror. He emphasized that the US and allies should not rely on the military option alone in the campaign against terrorism. “Economic, educational and social development should be undertaken on emergency basis,” he added.
“We have a free and vibrant media and polarity of voices in our society,” he said, referring to Pakistan’s democratic and independent civil society and government institutions and freedom of expression practices. The Florida-based fundamentalist pastor desecration of the Holy Quran on March 20, leading to a series of protests in Islamic countries including Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Organization of Islamic Conference has also issued a strong denunciation of the sacrilegious act.
