Benghazi: The United States ship fired cruise missiles on Libya on Saturday late night, foreign media reported, officials said. At least 110 missiles have been fired in Libya from allied forces.
The US military officials have confirmed that the first American tomahawk cruise missiles have been fired at targets inside Libya from ships in the Mediterranean Sea. Several people were injured in the attack, media reports.
The US military officials has said that US air force would also take part in the attack against Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi forces. They said Gaddafi strongholds would be targeted in Tripoli and Misrata.
In the first phase of the operation, named “Odyssey Dawn”, the US will target Libyan Integrated Missile Defence Systems, mainly near Tripoli and Misurata, officials said. French aircraft had initiated operations by targeting Libyan air fields.
It is not clear when the second wave of operations will begin.
United States President Barack Obama said that US military would not be sent in Libya. He said allied forces have been allowed to counter Gaddafi forces.
Secretary of State Hilary Clinton has said that the US forces would not be deployed in Libya.
Earlier, French fighter jets fired missiles in Benghazi and claimed to damage four military vehicles of Gaddafi forces.
British Prime Minister Davis Cameron has said that Britain military is also taking part in the attack. He said the propose of the attack on Libya is to protest the people from Gaddafi forces.
On the other hand, African Union has rejected any military operation in Libya.
Russia Foreign Minister has lamented over the military operation in Libya.
Germany has already refused to take part in the military operation.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has said that the approval of the resolution against Libya shows United Nations deviation from its principals.
Severe blasts and aerial firing have been reported in Libya. People are trying to run for safer places.
