We received the first gift for our “generosity” that we showed “in releasing Raymond Davis” (to quote Cameron Munter) when US drones killed at least 40 people attending a peace meeting. Just hardly a day after Davis took a flight to Washington, the US drones, being operated by the CIA, fired four missile on a tribal Jirgah killing more than 50 people including tribal elders and security officials.
The ‘generosity’ we showed toward US was reciprocated accordingly by the US through the unmanned aircrafts being operated by CIA from Pakistan. Before the demonstration of this generosity by our military and civilian leadership, the US drones were targeting only ‘terrorists’ but this generosity led to change in CIA strategy to target anyone in the tribal belt of our country.
As the rulers here in Pakistan termed the release of Davisd as per the law of the land, the same evening the US State Department spokesman finds it hard to answer a barrage of questions by reporters. If the issue was settled as per the law and blood money was paid or as per the US claim that Davis was enjoying immunity, then what ‘generosity’ (as per Munter) the government of Pakistan showed by releasing Davis ? the reporter asked The Spokesman denied the US paid any blood money to the heirs but said the issue was settled as per the law of the land. Then who paid the money because the issue was not settled as per the US insistence that Davis enjoys diplomatic immunity, instead as per the law of the land, which requires the culprit to pay a certain amount of money set mutually by the two parties to the heirs.
Suppose if the US paid the blood money to the heirs and they forgave the culprit with their free will, which law allows them to do so, then why the US ambassador is thanking the Government and what is the generosity, as per Munter, the government showed.
If the issue was settled as per the law of the lands then the question of generosity does not arise.
The nation needs answers to the questions, raised by the indecent haste in which the matter was settled.
For the sake of argument we admit that it was a deal done by the heirs of the victim with their free will and there was no pressure on them from anyone, but how the issue of succession was settled within hours by the court. Determination of succession, as to who are the legitimate heirs of the victims, is a lengthy process and some time it takes months to settle. As per the law, the legal heirs are required to apply for succession certificate before a second class magistrate. After receiving the application, the magistrate is required to advertise the matter in newspapers to know whether the person is legal successor or not, any one has objection over it or besides the person if there are anyone else who is a legal successor of the deceased. The relevant record of Nadra is needed to be checked to determine his/her claim. Then the question arise whether this practice was followed or not in this case? The answer is certainly no because this could not be done within hours.
The other aspect of the matter is why he was handed down just a mere two months term for possessing illegal and prohibited weapon. The offence entails maximum seven years in prison besides monetary fine. Why in this case such a light punishment was given and that was also settled as ‘undergone.’ This show that the judiciary also colluded in the engineered release of Davis.
All these and many other questions need answers and the nation must seek answers from all the ‘stakeholders’, the civilian and military leadership and the judiciary.
All those responsible for this ‘secret sellout’ needed to be exposed.
Anyway, the US responded to out generosity with raining of missiles fired from drones on a tribal jirgah. It is to be mentioned here the tribal elders gathered at the venue of missiles’ attack were not Taliban or Taliban or Al-Qaida supporters, but the supporter of government.
We should thank and reward the US Ambassador to Pakistan for the gesture US showed to out generosity with drone attacks. What should be the reward for the gesture? Munster be decorated with our highest civilian award and also invited to GHQ with a Guard of Honour followed thanks from our military leadership as they were part and parcel of the ‘generosity’.
