Bangalore: Ireland gave a upset defeat to England in the Cricket World Cup 2011 by three wickets at Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium Bangalore on Wednesday February 02.
Kevin O’Brien’s century, the fastest in world cups, helped Ireland to gain two point. He scored 113 runs on just 63 balls and was run out at the end of the match.
Alex Cusack made 47 runs while Mooney, Stirling and Ed Joyce hit 33, 32 and 32 runs, respectively.
Graeme Swann took three wickets while Tim Bresnan and James Andersen got one wicket each.
Earlier, English captain Andrew Strauss won the toss and chose to bat first.
England set a huge total of 328 runs for inexperienced Ireland. Jonathon Trott, Ian Bell and Kevin Pietersen scored 92, 81 and 58 runs, respectively for English side. While skipper Strauss made 34 runs.
John Mooney picked up four wickets for Irelands, while Trent Johnston, George Dockrell and Paul Stirling took 2, 1 and 1 wicket, respectively.
Kevin O’Brien was declared man of the match owing to his fastest century.
Ireland captain William Porterfield said that they would try to continue winning performance in future.
