Ben Ghazi: Libya’s beleaguered leader Col Muammar Gaddafi is losing control of country as protesters are consolidating their gains, news agencies reported on Thursday.
Reports said that a large number of forces with tanks have been deployed in the capital Tripoli while anti-Gaddafi protesters have also occupied a town adjacent to the capital.
Sources said that Libyan border troops were seizing cameras and mobile phones to prevent images getting out of the country.
In the eastern city of Benghazi, residents have been queuing to be issued with guns looted from the army and police in order to join what they are calling the battle for Tripoli.
A number of military units in the east say they have unified their command in support of the protesters.
Meanwhile An amercian television reported witnesses as saying anti-government protesters have declared victory elsewhere after reportedly seizing control of the third largest city.
Misrata is now in the hands of the opposition, who have driven out the mercenaries, according to witnesses and multiple media reports.
The opposition also controls the second-largest city of Benghazi, where crowds cheered as international journalists drove through the city.
U.S. President Barack Obama said a unified international response was forming against Gadhafi’s use of violence against protesters.
