Islamabad: Minister for Labour and Manpower and Religious Affairs Syed Khurshid Shah on Wednesday informed gas loadshedding resulted increase in the urea prices in the country adding Rs.14 billion subsidy is being provided in fertilizer sector. Replying to a Call Attention raised by Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah, Syed Amir Ali Shah, Nadeem Afzal Gondal and others regarding shortage of urea fertilizer and increase of prices in the country, he admitted that urea price has increased to Rs.813 per bag to Rs.1093 which mainly due to less gas supply to fertilizer companies.
He said that the government has already importing 125,000 tons urea from Saudi Arabia and tendered has also been floated to import additional 100,000 tons to meet the demand.
The minister said that price of urea would be Rs.1500 to Rs.1600 per
bag if the government does not provide subsidy. Rs. 300 subsidy is being provided to urea manufacturing companies per bag in term of gas facility, he added.
He said Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) has a stock of 48,000 tons urea, however this would be provided to farmers of flood-hit areas.
The minister expressed the hope that the prices of urea would be slashed as soon as full gas supply resume to the companies in March.
