Islamabad:The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday ordered to launch an inquiry against Director General Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Waseem Ahmed and arrest him if he was found guilty of protecting a key accused in NICL scandal.
The court earlier in the morning in its verbal orders said that the DG FIA be arrested immediately for creating hurdles in the probe by allegedly protecting Ameen Qasim Dada, a key accused in NICL scam.
Later, the SC withdrew its verbal order and observed that a case be registered against the DG if the allegations were proved against him.
A three-member bench of the SC headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had issued the arrest orders following the statement of FIA Deputy Director Muazzam Jah in which he told the court that an FIA team could not arrest Ameen Qasim during a raid at his house in Karachi as Waseem Ahmed was sitting with the accused there.
The court also issued orders of handing over the case to FIA Additional Director Zafar Qureshi again.
Justice Ramday remarked that the DG FIA did not know the rules and regulations, despite having top slot of the country’s major investigation agency, to carry out investigation therefore he protected the accused.
The CJ remarked why Waseem Ahmed invites accused to his house.
The secretary interior appeared before the court and said the additional director has been appointed to further probe the case. Zafar Qureshi expressed resolved that all the culprits would be put behind the bars.
He told the court that DG FIA asked him to leave the charge after he had recorded statement of a key accused Maalik who confessed that he had given Rs220 million to Moonis Elahi, a son of former Punjab chief minister Pervez Elahi.
The court observed that the legal action be taken against DG FIA if the allegations leveled against him were proved.
The bench adjourned the hearing till February 1.
