KARACHI: At least 55 First Information Reports of target killings were registered in various police stations in Karachi, the southern city of Pakistan, within first 16 days of January. While unofficially the actual death toll are being claimed above 100.
According to the police, 17 cases were registered in West Zone, 16 in South and 22 cases of target killing were registered in East Zone of the city. Out of these 55 cases 48 were registered against unknown accused.
Various high profile personalities including, pilot of Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah, a former Deputy Town Mayor and a young journalist of a private TV channel Wali Khan Babar, also fell prey to target killing.
Following to the unabated target killing in the city, the government decided to launch an operation in troubled areas of Karachi.
Heavy contingent of police and rangers participated in the operation and arrested more than 400 citizens. The affiliations of the arrested accused were not disclosed officially.
However, police sources told The News Tribe that majority of the arrested accused were belonged to the coalition political partners of the government.
In the opinion of various analyzers such type of operations are quite inappropriate, as operation was pre-announced and all criminal elements had left their dens earlier.
It is pertinent to mention here that a nationalist party had been demanding for swift operation, while other political parties opposed.
According to various media reports a consensus has developed among citizens that lack of political will is responsible for these casualties in recent spree of target killing.
