SHANGHAI: At least 740,000 individuals are currently living with HIV/AIDS in mainland China, said officials.
Statistics recently revealed that the number of those infected with HIV/AIDS in mainland China is expected to reach 1.2 million by 2015. More than 23 percent of them are reported to be migrants, primarily workers traveling from other countries, a foreign TV reported.
Health authorities stressed that migrant workers aged between 18 and 49 are mainly vulnerable to the disease because of their high mobility and relatively poor knowledge on HIV/AIDS preventive techniques.
Chinese government have launched a long-term nationwide HIV/AIDS awareness-raising campaign by setting up regular workshops to teach HIV/AIDS preventive strategies to the country’s 200 million migrant workers from rural areas.
The All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce has also urged employers to fully support and to incorporate HIV/AIDS prevention education into staff training.
A Shanghai Aids Treatment Center Medical representative similarly stressed that AIDS prevention should not be the responsibility of medical workers, and that the working society should raise awareness by providing related education.
