Islamabad: Pakistan is unlikely to lift ban on onions export to India through land routes, however any final decision to continue with the ban or lift it will be taken in a meeting of stakeholders on Monday.
Sources in Finance Myinistry told The News Tribe that there were arguments that the ban should be continued as reciprocation to the treat of Pakistan raw cotton businessmen by India.
Pakistan had imposed restrictions on export of onions to India through Wahgha boarder after its prices in the local market shot up to Rs80 per kg.
After the ban, over 100 trucks loaded with onions have lined up at Wahgha boarder on Pakistan’s side.
India has formally requested Pakistan to lift the ban on onion export to India. India is of the view that Pakistan should allow at least export of onion already loaded on trucks. But Commerce Ministry officials said that they would examine, if India had allowed trucks loaded with cotton to proceed to Pakistan after imposition of ban on export of raw cotton.
