Lucknow (India): The nearly-freezing temperature in northern India claimed nearly two dozen more lives during the last three days, despite the government efforts to distribute firewood and blanket to the poor.
A government official northern Uttar Pradesh state, the worst hit areas, said on Saturday that at least 22 people had died there over the past three days. With these deaths, the toll from two weeks of near-freezing temperatures has risen to 63.
At least 10 people have died from the cold in New Delhi, while six have died in Jharkhand state.
The temperature dipped below 37 degrees Fahrenheit (3 degrees Celsius) in parts of Uttar Pradesh this week. The government has distributed blankets and medicines among the poor.
