Lahore: Governor of Punjab Salman Taseer was laid to rest at Cavalry Ground graveyard on Wednesday.
Earlier, his funeral prayer, led by Allama Afzal Chisti, was offered at the Governor House amid tight security. which was attended by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Law Minister Babar Awan, Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira, PPP Secretary General Jahangir Badar, Population Welfare Minister Firdous Aashiq Awan, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar, Foreign Mininster Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Labor and Manpower Minister Khurshid Shah, PML-N leaders Haji Ehsanuddin Qureshi and Nadeem Kamran, PML-Q (like-Minded) leader Khurshid Mehmood Kusuri, Corp Commander Lahore, MQM leaders Babar Khan Ghori, Hyder Abbas Rizvi, Raza Haroon, former Punjab Governor Ghulam Mustafa Khar and a large number of the PPP activists.
Strict security arrangements were taken on the occasion as large number of police and Rangers personnel were deployed in and around Governor House.
After the funeral prayer, his body was taken to the graveyard by a helicopter. Close relatives of late Taseer, PPP leaders and workers and people from all walks of life were present on the occasion of his burial.
The PPP activists chanted slogans against the PML-N, compelling the Speaker of Punjab Assembly to leave the venue, while top leadership of the PML-N stayed away from the last rituals of the governor due to security reasons.
The prime minister came to the Governor House driving his car to attend the funeral prayer.
Lahore police claimed to have arrested two suspects from outside Governor House.
