Pakistan National Assembly approves Prevention of Electronic Crimes Bill 2015

ISLAMABAD: National Assembly of Pakistan approved the controversial Prevention of Electronic Crimes Bills 2015 here in Islamabad. The bill would become the official law only after approval from the Senate.

The bill faces heavy criticism from IT experts and civil society on the human rights ground and investing extra ordinary powers in the law enforcement agencies that may lead to human rights violation and abuse of power.

Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Anushay Rehman presented the bill in the National Assembly today and the bill was approved by the assembly today.

Online criticism of religion, country, courts and armed forces are now interventionable offences under the prevention of electronic crimes bill 2015. The bill also criminilises criticism of government on social media and text messaging without receiver’s consent.
