Pakistani Craftsman of Kaaba’s Central Door and Hajr-e-Aswad Cover Passes Away

Mecca: Muhammad Ashiq Hussain, the owner of the company that made the central door of the Kaaba and the cover of Hajr-e-Aswad, and hailing from Ahmedpur East and Bahawalpur district in Pakistan, has passed away.

According to media reports, Muhammad Ashiq Hussain’s father’s name was Malik Ghulam Qadir, who also worked as a goldsmith at the palace of Nawab Sadiq Muhammad Abbasi of Bahawalpur. His father sent him to Medina in 1970, where he initially worked as a shepherd. Later, Muhammad Ashiq became one of the major gold traders in Saudi Arabia.

Muhammad Ashiq had the honor of installing the central door of the Kaaba with his own hands. His company was entrusted with the construction and installation of the 200 kg gold door of the Kaaba. The rainwater spout from the roof of the Kaaba, known as the Mizab-e-Rahmat, was also designed and installed by his company.

In 1978, despite the Saudi government initially awarding the contract for the redesign of the Kaaba’s doors to a Lebanese company, Muhammad Ashiq’s firm took over the project. They meticulously completed the doors’ construction using pure gold, finishing the installation in just 15 days through their diligent efforts.

As a mark of gratitude for his exceptional work, Muhammad Ashiq requested and was granted the soil from the Kaaba that had accumulated during the installation of the doors and the Hajar-e-Aswad.
