Karachi: Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) today called upon a meeting to share the issue regarding the increase in salary of its faculty members and staff.
The meeting was attended by large number of senior faculty members and staff.
In the briefing, Prof. Dr. Masood Hameed Khan, Vice Chancellor-DUHS said that the University syndicate has decided to take loan from the local bank in order to pay the salaries that were increased through a notification by government of Sindh in July 2011, to avoid the situation of protest from the faculty and staff. The University Administration had also decided to slow down a few university projects in view of a short flow of funds from Sindh Govt and HEC and increased its recurring expenditures. He said that faculty members and staff of the University are still awaiting a 15 percent increase in their salaries six months after it was announced by the government.
He informed the University is managing 65 – 70 percent of its expenses from the revenue generated by its own resources. The University is paying increased salaries to lower staff by minimising our expenses,
but can practise austerity to a certain limit. The University is pressing the provincial government to increase the grant so that we can pay enhanced salaries to the faculty.
He further informed the faculty members were not being paid the raise as the government had not increased the university’s recurring grants. Government of Sindh and Higher Education Commission has given no response its various correspondence regarding issuance of funds. The Administration of the University is continuously discussing the matter with HEC and government of Sindh.
The Vice Chancellor also requested to raise the grant of Dow University as par with the grant of Liaquat University of Health Sciences, Jamshoro.
Giving presentation regarding demand of additional funds on account of revision of basic pay scales 2011 and package of doctors, the Vice Chancellor said that the HEC grants to medical university and per
student allocation is that the LUMHS get 0.114 grant per student, University of Health Sciences get 0.455 grant per student, Khyber medical university gets 0.495 grant per student whereas the Dow
University gets 0.037 grant per student. If DUHS get per student grant of Rs.0.114 million equivalent to LUMHS then HEC grant for DUHS should be Rs.618.22 million for the CFY 2011-12.
Govt of Sindh is giving grant to LUMHS as 0.119 per student with no hospital or such facility functioning, whereas there is no grant for DUHS from the Sindh Government.
