Nisar orders security for polio workers

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali directed all provincial police chiefs to ensure provision of security to polio vaccinators in their respective provinces.

While speaking to Minister of State for Health Saira Afzal Tarar on Wednesday, Chaudhry Nisar Ali directed for security of polio workers

Nisar’s directive comes a few days after four polio workers, three of them ladies, were gunned down in Quetta, the provincial capital of Baluchistan.

“We will address the concerns raised by provinces regarding security of polio workers,” he assured.

The health minister said that attacks on polio workers were a major hurdle for government’s efforts to defeat the crippling disease.

According to health officials, more than 270 cases of polio virus have already been reported across Pakistan.

Pakistan is one of the three countries in the world where polio remains endemic.
