London: The ‘International Day of the Disappeared’ is being observed today on account of individuals who are taken to unknown places due to imprisonment or political enmity.
The day for disappeared people is being celebrated throughout the world today. It is to identify people who are taken to unknown places due to imprisonment. The status of the missing persons is kept unknown from his/her family. Usually, they are kept under the poor conditions and also suffer maltreatment.
The United Nations today celebrates third annual International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances. Throughout the world there are various people who have been missing from time to time. According to sources, more or less 2,300 persons a day have been missing throughout the world. The status of such person is unknown whether they are alive or dead.
Nothing yet has been effective enough since the laws and jurisdictions are complex ones. In some countries, facilities have been given to post the photographs of missing persons on websites, bulletin boards, milk cartons and postcards.
United Nations in its website claims that enforced disappearance is used as a tool for spreading terror within the social circles. Today, entire global community is affected because of the disappearing. Today it is largely used as a ploy to suppress the opponents of the political parties.
The families which suffer from the dilemma of enforced disappearances without a death certificate or dead body. These pacts of Silence, an unspoken agreement among those involved in the disappearances are done in various countries including Chile.
On January 9th 2012, Thailand Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra had signed an international treaty for Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance. However no progress has been made thus far by the Thai Parliament for its ratification. In 2007, a report was made to public by Human Rights Watch which stated that Thai security forces have been involved in 22 enforced disappearance cases.
A social media campaign was launched by the British Red Cross to commemorate missing people throughout the world. Not only that comprised of disasters throughout the world but also armed conflicts and violence. Red Cross has also urged people to celebrate International Day of the Disappeared by changing their online avatars to support the cause.
The British Red Cross head of international family tracing, Emily Knox stated “Across the world, Red Cross and Red Crescent national societies are urging people to mark this special day through the Empty Frame campaign. We are looking to harness the power of social networks and encouraging people to share, tweet and engage in discussions on digital media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other social networks. Last year the British Red Cross traced and found 240 people from countries all around the world, including Afghanistan, Eritrea and Somalia. While it’s hard to imagine what another year of waiting for news and resolution means to the families of the disappeared, this is a time for the Red Cross to show solidarity with them.”
In Pakistan, thousands of Pakistanis have been disappeared forcefully on behalf of providing alleged assistance to terrorist organisations. A number of them have been handed to CIA or have been transferred to Bagram, Afghanistan who later transported to Guantanemo Bay.
The first reported incident of forced abduction in Pakistan came about in 2001 when Afghanistan was invaded by the United States during the War of Terror. A number of missing persons belong to Sindhi and Baloch nationalist movements.
