Lahore: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday issued notice to the federal government for April 26 in a petition, seeking directions to the government to stop US drone attacks in the country.
The petitioner, Barrister Iqbal Jafri, had moved the petition praying the court to order the government for a comprehensive report regarding agreement with the US or Blackwater, if any, in connection with the drone attacks.
The petitioner prayed that compensation should be paid to the victims of drone attacks.
According to a Human Rights Commission’s report issued on Thursday, Over 900 people were killed in US drone attacks in Pakistan’s northwest tribal region near Afghan border in 2010.
The CIA-run drone program is ostensibly against alleged Al-Qaeda and Taliban militants, but has killed mostly non-combatants. Pakistan has lodged protest against the attacks, saying these prove counter productive.
