ALGIERS: Violent clashes over rising food cost and unemployment in Algeria have left at least 2 people dead and more than 400 injured including 300 policemen.
Two people including a teenager were killed in the recent riots. The teenager was shot dead outside the capital Algiers while the man was killed after being hit by a teargas shell on Friday.
Interior Minister, Dahou Ould Kablia, said “More than 300 cops have been wounded, while on the other side there are fewer than 100 hurt.”
Police used teargas and water cannons to disperse protesters in the capital Algiers and several other towns.
It is pertinent to mention here that the riots have been erupting despite the strict security in the country.
It has been reported in the local media that the protesters looted government buildings, banks and post offices in several eastern cities.
Prices of daily life item including sugar and flour have doubled in the past few months. However, the government has promised to mitigate towering prices.
