Lagos: A passenger plane (Dana Air flight) has crashed into a two-story building in Lagos, Nigeria, killing all of the 153 people on board.
The weather was clear and sunny in the city. The plane was en route to Lagos from Abuja, said Harold Denuren, head of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority. The authority has confirmed there are no survivors.
Rescuers were dispatched to the scene immediately after the incident.
Local residents have reportedly witnessed bodies burning at the crash site. Nearby buildings have been evacuated just after the crash.
Lagos’ international airport is a major hub for West Africa and saw 2.3 million passengers pass through it in 2009, according to the most recent statistics provided by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, AP reported.
In August 2010, the US announced it had given Nigeria the FAA’s Category 1 status, its top safety rating that allows the nation’s domestic carriers to fly directly to the States.
But Nigeria, like many African countries, has a poor air safety record, though some efforts have been made to improve it following a number of airline disasters in 2005.
According to some reports, there were 147 people on board.
