Lahore: Health department of Punjab government is launching an ambulance service with name of ‘1155’ for pregnant women in unprivileged areas of Southern Punjab.
Basic aim of program is to take expecting women living in far flung villages of the area to hospital so that the child’s birth could be safe, sources in the department revealed.
“For this purpose, health department has completed paper work and will send it to Chief Minister of Punjab for approval while the service would be named 1155,” they added.
At present, there are 36 free ambulances working at basic health units and rural health centers in 7 flood-hit areas of Southern Punjab.
“Many pregnant women are being taken to health centers by these ambulances saving lives of women,” the sources said.
Keeping effectiveness of the program in view, the health department has planned to extend the project and has decided to run it on permanent basis.
Initially ambulance service program would be launched in 20 districts of Southern Punjab and later it would be spread to remote areas.
Likely to start from the next fiscal year, the service would free and patient’s family has to just call ambulance service centres to carry the patient to nearby health centres.
