Heatwave Kills 17 People in Karachi as ‘Feels Like’ Temperature Hits 51°C

Karachi: A severe heatwave sweeping through Karachi has resulted in the deaths of 17 people within the last 24 hours, according to rescue officials. With temperatures reaching up to 41 degrees Celsius yesterday and the “feels like” temperature of 51 degrees, the extreme conditions have proven deadly.

The recent surge in fatalities includes six additional bodies found in various parts of the city, bringing the total number of heat-related deaths to 17. According to rescue officials, 6 new dead bodies of the victims, aged between 35 and 60 years, were found in Jamia Cloth, Golimar, Super Highway, Gulistan-e-Johar, Landhi, and one body from Federal B Area Karimabad.

Many of the deceased were identified as drug addicts, a group particularly vulnerable to the intense heat. The bodies have been transported to police stations and subsequently to the morgue for identification.

Karachi is currently enduring a heatwave with temperatures recorded at 41 degrees Celsius and the “feels like” temperature reaching a scorching 51 degrees on Monday afternoon, as reported by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). The high humidity level was around 40 percent, exacerbating the oppressive heat.

The PMD has warned that the heatwave will persist throughout this week , with daytime temperatures expected to exceed 40°C. The sea breeze, which typically offers some relief, has been blocked during the day, intensifying the heat further.

Local authorities and rescue services are on high alert, urging residents to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. Citizens are advised to stay indoors, remain hydrated, and avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun. Efforts are being made to provide support and resources to the most vulnerable populations, including those without adequate shelter or means to stay cool.
