Karachi: Pakistan national cricket team captain, Babar Azam, has initiated legal action against senior anchor Mubasher Lucman, filing a defamation lawsuit demanding Rs 1 billion in compensation over baseless match-fixing allegations.
The star cricketer decided to take this step after consulting with his legal team, arguing that Lucman’s accusations have severely damaged his reputation. The lawsuit challenges Lucman to substantiate his claims or face the hefty damages sought by Azam.
The controversy erupted following a video circulated on social media where Mubasher Lucman accused Babar Azam of receiving an Audi E-Tron from questionable bookies and owning apartments in Australia and New Zealand acquired under dubious circumstances. These allegations were made in the context of Pakistan’s disappointing performance in a recent tournament in the USA, where the team was prematurely eliminated after a loss to the USA and a narrow victory over Ireland.
In his video, Lucman alleged that Babar accepted expensive gifts in exchange for intentionally losing international matches. He highlighted the Audi E-Tron and the overseas apartments as purported evidence of these claims. Additionally, Lucman criticized former captain Shaheen Shah Afridi for his underwhelming performance in the T20 World Cup, further stoking controversy.
Babar Azam’s legal notice to Lucman emphasizes the baseless nature of these allegations and demands that the anchor either provide proof or compensate for the reputational damage. The notice underlines that such unfounded claims have not only tarnished Azam’s personal image but also impacted his professional standing.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has yet to comment officially on the matter. However, the accusations have sparked a significant backlash from fans and cricket analysts, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the claims.
