UAE Bans Teaching the Quran Online Without a License

Abu Dhabi: The United Arab Emirates has announced a ban on unlicensed digital platforms offering Quran-teaching services. The General Authority for Islamic Affairs, Endowments, and Zakat issued an advisory on June 2, warning citizens and residents about the dangers posed by unqualified educators providing religious instruction online.

The advisory emphasized the importance of ensuring the accuracy and appropriateness of religious education to safeguard the younger generation from incorrect teachings and potential misinterpretations of Islamic principles. Many individuals offering Quran teaching through digital platforms lack proper credentials and religious education, leading to the spread of misinformation.

Authorities have observed numerous unlicensed individuals conducting classes and using promotional advertisements to attract students. Parents are urged to exercise caution and report any suspicious or unlicensed teaching activities to relevant authorities to help curb the spread of unqualified religious education providers.

Engaging with unlicensed educators not only risks severe legal penalties but also exposes parents to the same consequences. UAE law mandates that anyone teaching the Quran without a license or permit faces imprisonment for a minimum of two months and fines up to 50000 Dirhams (AED), or one of these penalties.

To legally teach the Quran, individuals must meet specific criteria, including being at least 21 years old, having good conduct, not having been sentenced for felonies or misdemeanors that violate honor or trust (unless rehabilitated), and proving health fitness for the work. Additionally, those managing centers must have practical experience and pass relevant tests and interviews.

Centers for Quran teaching must obtain a proper license and meet stringent requirements, such as fulfilling technical and health standards, providing separate classrooms for different genders, and equipping facilities with necessary tools for licensed activities.
