Punjab Government Announces a Reduction of Rs. 4 in Roti Price

Lahore: In order to provide relief to the public due to rapidly rising inflation, the Punjab government has reduced the price of roti by Rs. 4, bringing it to Rs. 16 effective from Sunday.

According to media reports, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has stated that the Punjab government has reduced the price of roti from Rs. 20 to Rs. 16. Maryam Nawaz emphasized that she has instructed all districts of Punjab and relevant authorities to ensure strict implementation of this decision.

It is pertinent to mention that in Sindh, the price of roti is between Rs. 25 to Rs. 30, and due to gas load shedding, the public is compelled to buy expensive roti.

Nanbais Reject Government’s Plan:

Nanbais in the province have refused to sell roti at the government-mandated rate. The Nanbai Association unanimously rejected the government’s decision, stating their readiness to comply only if provided with a subsidy.

President of the Nanbai Association, emphasized their willingness to reduce the roti price if the Punjab government offers them a subsidy. He pointed out the challenges posed by high prices of wheat flour and LPG, questioning how they could sell roti at cheaper rates without governmental support in terms of subsidies for gas and electricity.

The Nanbai Association reiterated that they would consider selling roti at Rs16 only if the government provided them with flour at cheap rates. Earlier this month, the Punjab cabinet set the minimum support price of wheat for the year 2023-2024 at Rs3,900 per 40kg.
