Islamabad: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) on Thursday gave the initial approval to increase electricity price by Rs. 5 per unit for one month, sought in the form of a monthly fuel adjustment for February.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has completed the hearing on the request of the Federal Commission Agency, and the final decision regarding the increase in prices will be issued later.
During the hearing, NEPRA member  Rafique Shaikh sad that consumers are burdened due to the decrease in electricity demand. He questioned why work is not being done to increase demand, stating that electricity production from local coal has decreased by 36%, leading to an increase in prices due to the non-utilization of local coal. He added that when expensive LNG-based power plants are operated, electricity becomes expensive.
Rafique Shaikh said that both exchange rate loss and consumer loss are occurring separately, as expensive power plants have been run, leading to an increase in capacity charges and fuel charges.
A member from Balochistan said that a burden of Rs. 2.63 per unit will be imposed in the three-month adjustment, and this month there will be a burden of Rs. 7.63 per unit. According to the NEPRA authority, benchmarks will be set to reduce capacity.
According to the authorities of the Power Division, the government aims to recover 1.2 trillion from electricity consumers. From September 7 to March 25, electricity theft worth Rs. 1.16 trillion has been prevented, and Rs. 85.90 billion has been recovered from the electricity theft eradication campaign.
The NEPRA chairman said that last month, an inquiry was ordered regarding NTDC and CPP. Inquiry professionals are working, and a decision will be made in light of the report. The inquiry will be completed within five to seven days, after which NEPRA will announce the decision after Eid.
