Common Chemicals Found in Homes Pose Major Threat to Mental Health

Washington: Medical experts have concluded from research results that common chemicals found in homes can pose significant risks to mental health.

According to international news agencies, experts have stated that chemicals commonly used for household purposes, such as those found in hair products, furniture sprays, textiles, cosmetic and baby products, or antibacterial medications, can form the basis of hazards to mental health.

Researchers have found that several chemicals can affect the human nervous system and lead to diseases, including multiple sclerosis and autism.

A study conducted by experts from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, reveals that after examining nearly 2,000 common chemicals, it has been discovered that 292 chemicals are toxic to a specific type of brain cell called “oligodendrocytes.” Oligodendrocytes are cells that create a protective insulation around nerve cells.

According to experts, oligodendrocytes damage is indicative of multiple sclerosis and other neurological diseases. It has been proven that household products contain specific chemicals that can directly harm oligodendrocytes.
