Islamabad: Barrister Salman Safdar, the lawyer for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has claimed that the founder of PTI and former chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Imran Khan, will be released from jail before the 25th of Ramadan.
Addressing reporters following a court appearance in the cipher and Toshakhana case, Barrister Safdar said that there is no criminality in the complaint processed by the FIA. He emphasized that neither Imran Khan nor former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi were mentioned in the initial complaint that prompted action by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
Questioning the validity of the FIA’s inquiry against the PTI leaders, Barrister Safdar highlighted that the probe in the cipher case commenced a week before any formal complaint was registered, raising concerns about the irregularities in the proceedings.
He further stated that there were so many flaws in this case that even during the hearing, the judge was compelled to term the jail trial of Imran Khan as a “mockery” and questioned the presiding judge’s understanding of the law.
It is worth noting that the District and Sessions Court of Islamabad dismissed two cases filed against the founder of PTI. In January, a special court handed down a 10-year jail sentence to both Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the cipher case, alleging conspiracy to misuse cipher contents for illicit purposes.
Imran Khan was charged under the Official Secrets Act after alleging a conspiracy behind his government’s ouster. His assertions were backed by the public display of a “threat letter” during a speech on March 27 last year, revealing a diplomatic document that he claimed led to his government’s downfall through a subsequent vote of no confidence.
