Electricity Price Set to Surge by Rs. 5 per Unit; CPPA Seeks Approval for February’s Fuel Adjustment

Karachi: Electricity consumers in Pakistan are poised to face another blow to their wallets as the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has requested a significant tariff increase of Rs. 5 per unit, attributing it to fuel charges adjustments (FCA) for February 2024

After the recent surge over Rs. 7 per unit in January due to fuel adjustments, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has now once again formally petitioned the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) for a substantial increase in electricity rates by Rs. 5 per unit for the month of February.

The request, made under the banner of monthly fuel adjustment, is poised to undergo deliberation during NEPRA’s scheduled hearing on March 28. Should it gain approval, the proposed tariff revision is anticipated to impose a formidable financial strain on consumers, exceeding a staggering sum of Rs40 billion.

In a concurrent development, the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has approached the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) with a plea for a substantial hike in gas prices, slated to take effect from July 1.

Under the proposed scheme, SSGC advocates for a remarkable increase of Rs324 per million British thermal units (MMBTU), aiming to establish a revised average price of Rs1740.80 per MMBTU. Should OGRA greenlight the proposal, consumers nationwide would grapple with an additional financial burden exceeding Rs79.63 billion.

The rationale behind SSGC’s petition stems from a projected revenue deficit of Rs79.63 billion for the forthcoming fiscal year, with a significant portion attributed to local gas sales and Re-gasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) transactions, compounded by an estimated renovation shortfall of Rs935 million.
