Huge Disparity Between Govt. and Market Fruit Prices in Karachi, Commissioner Stays Silent

Karachi: With the start of Ramadan a glaring gap persists between the officially sanctioned government rates and the actual market prices of fruits across Karachi. Despite the alarming surge in prices, the Commissioner’s silence echoes louder than ever, seemingly condoning the exploitative practices of profit-hungry vendors at the public’s expense.

According to the report, in various markets including Karachi, bananas, apples, watermelons, and dates, along with all fruits, are being sold at higher prices than those listed in the government rate list.

Despite the alarming surge in prices, the Commissioner’s silence echoes louder than ever, seemingly condoning the exploitative practices of profit-hungry vendors at the public’s expense.

A clear disparity is being observed between the price list of 57 fruits issued by the Karachi Commissioner and the prevailing rates in local markets. Notably, bananas graded A, are selling for Rs. 300 per dozen, a steep hike from the government’s listed price of Rs. 170. Similarly, Coconut, large, is being sold at Rs. 450 instead of Rs. 322 per piece, while smaller coconuts are being sold at Rs. 350 instead of Rs. 288 per piece.

Moreover, ginger is priced at Rs. 250 per kilogram instead of the prescribed Rs. 132, grade A papayas at Rs. 250 per kilogram instead of Rs. 158, grade B papayas at Rs. 220 per kilogram instead of Rs. 138, and golden grade A apples at Rs. 350 per kilogram instead of Rs. 219.
