Moscow, Beijing: Russia and China have initiated discussions on a joint project to establish a nuclear power plant on the moon.
Yuri Borisov, the chairman of Russia’s space agency Roscosmos, disclosed on Tuesday that Russia and China are exploring the possibility of constructing a nuclear power station on the moon between 2033 and 2035.
Borisov hinted that such a project could pave the way for establishing lunar communities, indicating a significant leap in space exploration and habitation efforts. Borisov highlighted that Russia possesses expertise and experience in space nuclear energy, and they are collaborating with China on this project. He expressed Moscow’s readiness to share its expertise in nuclear space energy with China, with whom Russia has been collaborating on lunar missions.
Moreover, Borisov outlined Russian ambitions to develop a nuclear-powered cargo spacecraft, addressing technical challenges and expressing confidence in the project’s feasibility.
In contrast to rumors, Russian President Vladimir Putin recently refuted claims of Russia’s intention to deploy nuclear weapons in space, dismissing such assertions as attempts to coerce Russia into arms negotiations on Western terms.
