Rawalpindi: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been formally indicted in a £190 million reference initiated by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
The court, presided over by Accountability Court Judge Nasir Javed Rana, announced the indictment and summoned five witnesses for the upcoming hearing, scheduled for March 6. Both accused individuals have denied the charges leveled against them by the prosecution.
Both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi, the accused in the case, pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against them.
During the preceding session, the court granted former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s plea to meet his spouse, and Judge Rana instructed NAB to furnish two copies of the reference to the defense counsel.
Additionally, Imran Khan sought permission to consult his dentist, citing a lapse of seven months since his last dental checkup. However, the judge advised him to approach the jail medic, prompting Khan to express concerns about potential dental extractions by the medic, to which the judge suggested filing an application.
The court adjourned the indictment without further proceedings until February 27.
It is noteworthy that the £190 million case traces back to NAB’s inquiry into the Al-Qadir University Trust case, which later evolved into the £190 million investigation in March 2023, transitioning to a full-fledged investigation on April 28.
NAB alleges that Imran Khan and his spouse acquired substantial sums of money and hundreds of kanals of land from Malik Riaz of Bahria Town, purportedly in exchange for Rs 50 billion settled with the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), offsetting a fine levied by the Supreme Court.
