London: The UK Conservative Party has suspended Member of Parliament Lee Anderson following his controversial remarks suggesting that London’s Mayor, Sadiq Khan, is under the influence of “Islamists.”
Anderson’s suspension came after he asserted during an interview with GB News that while he didn’t believe Islamists control the entire country, they allegedly exert influence over Sadiq Khan and London, accusing the mayor of ceding control of the capital to his associates.
The remarks sparked widespread condemnation from various quarters, with critics labeling them as racist and Islamophobic. Labour Party chairwoman Anneliese Dodds condemned Anderson’s comments, emphasizing their divisive and discriminatory nature.
The Muslim Council of Britain also expressed disgust at Anderson’s statements, categorizing them as extremist and reprehensible.
In response to the backlash, Mayor Sadiq Khan denounced Anderson’s comments as racist and Islamophobic, warning that they would only fuel anti-Muslim sentiments and exacerbate existing tensions. He stated that Prime Rishi Sunak’s silence on this matter is equivalent to defending controversial remarks.
Amid mounting criticism and condemnation, the Conservative Party announced on Saturday that Anderson would be suspended from the party, effectively removing him from his position as a Conservative lawmaker in Parliament.
