US Vetoes Another UN Security Council Resolution Calling for Ceasefire in Gaza

United Nations: Amidst the ongoing turmoil in Gaza, the United Nations Security Council convened in a critical emergency session, seeking to address the escalating humanitarian crisis and the urgent need for a ceasefire. However, hopes for immediate action were dashed as the United States once again exercised its veto power, derailing a resolution put forth by Algeria that demanded an immediate cessation of hostilities.

Algeria’s Ambassador, Amar Benjama, opened the session by passionately advocating for swift intervention, emphasizing the Council’s duty to respond decisively to the unfolding tragedy in Gaza. He stressed the urgency of the situation, highlighting the dire consequences of continued violence for innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.

The proposed resolution gained overwhelming support from 13 out of 15 Council members, with the UK abstaining. However, the veto by the United States once again thwarted the resolution’s adoption, eliciting widespread condemnation from other Council members.

China’s Ambassador, Zhang Jun, criticized the US veto, stating that it sends the wrong message and exacerbates the crisis in Gaza. Similarly, Russia’s Ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, accused the US of providing Israel with a “license to kill” and called for urgent action to address the deteriorating situation.

Nebenzia emphasized that the use of the veto by the US was detrimental, pushing Gaza further into crisis while Palestinians struggle on the brink of death. He criticized the US argument that the draft resolution jeopardized ongoing talks, stating that the violence destabilizes the entire region, necessitating swift action by the Council to halt the carnage.

Palestine’s Ambassador, Riyad H. Mansour, lamented the Council’s inaction, citing the staggering toll of Palestinian casualties and the mounting humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. He urged the international community to hold Israel accountable for its actions and to demand an immediate ceasefire to prevent further loss of life.

Qatar’s Ambassador, Alya Ahmed Saif Al-Thani, speaking on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council, decried the unfolding disaster in Gaza as the worst humanitarian crisis in history. She underscored Qatar’s commitment to facilitating efforts to secure a ceasefire and protect civilians amidst the relentless violence.

Despite the setback at the Security Council, Algeria vowed to persist in its advocacy for a ceasefire, emphasizing the need for international solidarity and collective action to address the crisis in Gaza. As the situation continues to deteriorate, calls for an end to the violence and meaningful diplomatic intervention grow louder on the global stage.

It is worth noting that on Tuesday, the Gaza Health Ministry reported that the death toll in the Gaza Strip has climbed to 29,195, with 69,170 individuals wounded, amidst ongoing Israeli assaults. The ministry’s press statement revealed that within the last 24 hours alone, the Israeli military has claimed the lives of 103 Palestinians and injured 142 others in the region.
