Islamabad: The Election Commission has completed its investigations into the allegations of rigging made by the former Commissioner Rawalpindi, Liaqat Ali Chattha.
According to sources, all DROs (District Returning Officers) and AROs (Assistant Returning Officers) of Rawalpindi Division have unanimously rejected the allegations of rigging in the elections by the former commissioner.
The Election Commission’s high-level investigative committee will present its report to the Election Commission after the final session today. The investigative committee recorded written statements of all 6 DROs of Rawalpindi Division.
According to sources, statements of 13 National Assembly and 26 Provincial Assembly returning officers in Rawalpindi Division have also been recorded. The transcript of the press conference regarding the allegations of rigging by the former commissioner of Rawalpindi has also been included as part of the investigative report.
On the other hand, the Supreme Court of Pakistan dismissed the petition seeking the annulment of the February 8 general elections, imposing a fine of Rs 0.5 million on the petitioner for continued absence.
The applicant, Ali Khan, had requested investigations into election rigging and for holding new elections. However, upon the non-appearance of the petitioner, the court dismissed the petition, imposing a fine of five hundred thousand rupees on the petitioner.
It is noteworthy that following the February 8 general elections, Pakistan witnessed political turbulence, with major parties alleging widespread rigging. PTI’s founder, Imran Khan, condemned the electoral irregularities, labeling them as the “mother of all rigging,” a sentiment echoed by various political factions, further highlighting the contentious nature of the electoral process and the challenges of ensuring transparency and fairness in democratic exercises.
