Karachi: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) conducted an unauthorized election rally in the Clifton area of Karachi without permission. In response, the police took action, detaining dozens of workers. During the PTI workers’ stone pelting, several officers, including the SHO Clifton, sustained injuries and were transported to the hospital.
According to media reports, a large number of PTI workers, including women, participated in PTI’s election rally near Teen Talwar, Clifton. The workers raised party flags and banners, chanting slogans against the government.
The police said it tried to prevent the rally to take place because PTI had not taken any permission for a rally in the red zone. Following this, the Police used tear gas and baton charges resulting in injuries to both parties.
The PTI workers became agitated and started pelting stones at the police when the police tried to prevent the unauthorized rally. This led to a skirmish in the area and at least six law enforcement officers, including Boat Basin SHO Riaz Niazi, sustained injuries and were subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment. The police arrested more than 25 PTI workers.
As per the report, PTI workers also expressed their anger towards media workers. The camera operator of a private TV channel was injured by the stone-throwing, while the PTI workers also threw eggs on the media cameras.
PTI has demanded the release of its detained workers, condemning police actions claiming it has the constitutional right to electioneering. The PTI leadership accused the authorities of allegedly hindering their election-related activities. Media organizations also decried police brutality against journalists covering the event, alleging that the police tortured and to injured journalists for simply reporting the rally.
