Brussels: Amidst ongoing Israeli aggression in Gaza, EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, presses for a two-state solution, challenging Israel’s military-focused approach. He made this statement ahead of crucial talks in Brussels that are to take place to address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
In a statement on Monday, Josep Borrell while highlighting the United Nations’ condemnation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s rejection of a two-state solution, emphasized the need for a definitive two-state solution, criticizing Israel’s reliance on military means for peace and Netanyahu’s rejection of calls for a Palestinian state stating, “What we want to do is to build a two–state solution. So let’s talk about it,”.
Amid the three-month-old war in Gaza, Borrell highlighted the asymmetry in Israel’s objective, stating that focusing solely on the destruction of Hamas is one-sided. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties and displacement in Gaza, with Israel asserting that the war could continue for “many months.”
He told Israeli authorities that “peace and stability cannot be built only by military means, and not in this particular way of using military means.” Josep Borrell questioned, “Which are the other solutions they have in mind? To make all the Palestinians leave? To kill them? 25,000 already in Gaza, 70% women and children,”. He stressed that it is now time for Israel to seriously discuss a definitive resolution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Josep Borrell urged the bloc’s ministers to present a united position with a comprehensive perspective in the search for sustainable peace.
The EU’s diplomatic service has sent a discussion paper outlining the proposed peace plan to its 27 member countries, emphasizing dialogue and a comprehensive approach to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The 27 ministers of the European bloc will hold separate meetings in Brussels with counterparts from Israel, the Palestinian Authority, and key Arab states to discuss the situation.
