Human Brains Are Superior and Learn New Information Better Than AI Robots: Research

Islamabad:  While technology leaders are touting a future filled with self-driving cars, instant cancer diagnostics, and computer-generated music, scientists argue that the human brain still outshines artificial intelligence (AI) in learning new information.

According to a recent study, researchers compared the learning processes of humans to AI models. The researchers stated that the process of thinking and learning in our brains involves an additional stage that makes us more alert and astute. They discovered that humans have a unique advantage – the ability to consolidate new knowledge, skills, or memories before refining nerve connections. This process minimizes errors when recalling information, making humans more efficient learners.

In contrast, AI, reminiscent of the Terminator, employs a method known as “backpropagation.” This approach involves learning by eliminating errors until the correct answer is reached. However, it requires AI to process data hundreds or even thousands of times to fully comprehend it.

The study’s author, Dr. Yuhang Song from Oxford University, emphasized the superiority of the human brain in various critical aspects. He pointed out that backpropagation demands more exposures to learn and is susceptible to catastrophic interference between new and old information. When trained on new tasks, AI often experiences a decline in performance on previous tasks.

Dr. Song noted, “Our biological systems often need to rapidly adapt to changing environments and have an advantage in this respect.” This distinction and the genius of the human brain is its ability to instantaneously connect ideas, something which the AI cannot do.

It is noteworthy that numerous experts have signed a letter warning of the “risks of extinction” posed by AI towards humanity.
