ECP Rejects the Recent Senate Resolution Seeking Delay in the Elections

Islamabad: Another resolution was submitted in the Senate seeking to postpone the upcoming general elections scheduled for 8 February 2024 citing weather and security threats. However, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) rejected calls for delaying elections, clarifying that the elections will be held as per the schedule on February 8, 2024.

According to media reports, the recent resolution submitted in the Senate by Senator Hilal-ur-Rehman, representing the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata),  was seeking a three-month delay in the upcoming elections. The resolution contended that the severe cold and anticipated snowfall in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) during the next month could hinder voter turnout.

Moreover, Senator Hilal-ur-Rehmanhas also cited security concerns in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, stating that the candidates are afraid of terrorist attacks during the election campaign.

In the resolution, the senator said that there is a feeling of deprivation among the voters and candidates of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while the date of the election in the province is proving to be unsuitable, the general election should be postponed to a suitable date instead of February 8.

The number of resolutions submitted in the Senate related to the elections has so far reached 4, of which 3 resolutions seek to postpone the elections, while Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan submitted the resolution advocating for maintaining the original schedule and holding the elections on time. JI’s Mushtaq Ahmed Khan formally submitted an application to the Supreme Court, urging a thorough examination of the constitutional validity of the Senate’s resolution and the initiation of contempt proceedings against those advocating an election delay.

Despite the continuous demand for the delay in the elections, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday rejected the Senate resolution, clarifying that the elections will be held as per the schedule on February 8, 2024.

It is worth noting that earlier on January 12, Senator Hidayat Ullah had also submitted a resolution seeking a delay in the elections citing once again “security concerns” as the reason. Another resolution put forward by Senator Dilawar Khan on January 5 mentioned security concerns and weather as the basis for seeking a delay in the general elections, which prompted political uncertainty leading to a significant drop in the KSE-100 index of nearly 900 points.
