Gabriel Attal, Man Responsible for the Abaya Ban, Appointed as New Prime Minister of France

Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed Gabriel Attal as the new Prime Minister of France.

According to media reports, Following the former French Prime Minister, Élisabeth Borne’s resignation from the position just yesterday, Gabriel Attal has been appointed by French President Emmanuel Macron to replace her, making Attal the youngest Prime Minister in French history at the age of 34. Prior to this appointment, Gabriel Attal served as the Minister of Education in 2023.

Attal was publicly disclosed as gay in 2018 while in a relationship with Stephane Sejourne, Macron’s former political adviser.

Attal gained popularity among conservatives after his first move as the Minister of Education was the banning of the Muslim abaya dress in state schools at the beginning of the new academic year in France, a move lauded by French President Emmanuel Macron. Special officers were appointed to enforce the ban and the girls who arrived in schools wearing abayas were forced to take them off, while those who didn’t comply were forced to go back home.

The ban on abayas targeting Muslim women earned Attal popularity in French society in which according to a poll by IFOP, a staggering 81% of the French population endorses the prohibition of abayas and qamis in public schools. The ban caused significant controversy and protests as it put immense pressure on young Muslim girls and is likely an obstacle in their pursuit of education.

It is noteworthy that the French government has been under scrutiny for its policies and statements targeting Muslims in recent years, including raids on mosques and charitable organizations, and the enactment of an “anti-separatism” law imposing extensive restrictions on the Muslim community.

The former French Prime Minister, Élisabeth Borne, had resigned from the position just yesterday following turmoil in the political landscape due to an immigration law enabling the government to expel foreign individuals.
