Sheikh Hasina Wajid’s Party Wins ‘Controversial’ General Elections in Bangladesh

Dhaka: In the general elections of Bangladesh, once again, Sheikh Hasina Wajid’s party, the Awami League, has secured a significant victory and came to the position of forming the government.

According to international news agencies, the opposition parties boycotted the general elections in Bangladesh. Following this, Sheikh Hasina Wajid’s Awami League achieved substantial victory. Early reports suggest a turnout of approximately 40% in the general elections.

With this electoral victory, Sheikh Hasina Wajid is now set to become the Prime Minister of Bangladesh for the fifth time.

The Awami League, led by Sheikh Hasina Wajid, secured 223 seats out of the total 298 seats in the election, while independent candidates, instead of any other major political party, achieved success on a large scale, obtaining 63 seats.

According to the Bangladesh Election Commission, the current opposition party, the Jatiya Party, has only secured 11 seats in the 300-member parliament.

Media reports suggest that several successful candidates, who contested as independent candidates after not being selected by the Awami League for tickets, were directed to participate in the election as dummy candidates.

It is noteworthy that 76-year-old Sheikh Hasina Wajid has been the Prime Minister of Bangladesh since 2009, and she has labelled the opposition parties boycotting the election as terrorist organizations.

Hasina’s government faces accusations of human rights abuses and a crackdown on the opposition. The Awami League strategically avoided contesting certain seats to prevent the legislature from being labelled a one-party institution. Despite the low turnout, the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) boycotted the election, calling it a “sham,” amid mass arrests impacting their ranks.
